History

Shenyang is a renowned cultural and historic city. At first, Shenyang was named because it was situated in the north of the anicent Shenhe River which was a tributary of the Hun River. Shenyang is regarded as one of the cradles of Chinese nation, with its birth to the early culture of Liaohe River basin. According to an archaeological research into Xinle Cultural Relics, human beings started to live and multiply in this region as early as 7200 years ago, in the Neolithic Age. From the establishment as the Houcheng City to now, the city of Shenyang enjoys a history of almost 2,300 years. Shenyang is famous for the saying “The birthplace of one dynasty and capital city of two dynasties”. In 1625, the founder of the Qing Dynasty (also known as “Houjin Dynasty”)---Nu’er’ha’chi moved the capital city to today’s Shenyang, renaming it “Shengjing”. In 1636, the second emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Hong tai ji changed the title of the country from “Houjin”to “Qing”. Then 1n 1644, after the army of Qing had entered Beijing and made it the capital city, Shenyang was designated as the co-capital. Today’s ShenYang Palace Museum, which is the site of the royal palace of the Early Qing Dynasty, stands\s to be one of the only two complete royal complex existed in China.

Human beings began to farm, fish, hunt, and multiply in this region, creating the Xinle Culture.

Shenyang was incorporated into the County of Liaodong after Emperor Qin Shihuang had unified China and divided the country into 36 counties.

the Western Han Dynasty

Shenyang has taken shape of a city, and was called “Houcheng” City.

the Tang Dynasty

 was renamed “Shenzhou”

921AD

The first emperor of the Liao Dynasty moved here, and built clay walls. Thereafter production began to develop in this region.

the Jin Dynasty

invaded by the first emperor of the Jin Dynasty; the old name “Shenzhou” was followed.

1296AD

In the Yuan Dynasty, clay walls were reconstructed and “Shenzhou” was renamed “Shenyanglu”, under the jurisdiction of Liaoyang.  According to the traditional Chinse saying “To the north of a mountain is yin, whilst to the north of a river is yang”, Shenyang got its name because it was located to the north of Shen River. There has been 702 years since the name of Shenyang made its official appearance in historical materials.

1386AD

In the Ming Dynasty, “Shenyanglu” was renamed “Shenyangzhongwei”.

1625AD

The founder of the Qing Dynasty ---Nu’er’ha’chi moved the capital city from Liaoyang to Shenyang, and began to build the royal palace (known as ShenYang Palace Museum) within the city.

1643

Hong tai ji renamed it “Shengjing”

1644

designated as co-capital when Beijing was made the capital city.

1657

“Fengtian” Governmet Office was set in Shenyang under the emperor’s order and God’s will, Shenyang was also known as “Fengtian” (meaning under the will of God)

1911

After the Revolution of 1911, Shenyang was the capital of the warlord’s government.

1923

The government office of the city of “Fengtian” was formally established. It was the first time that Shenyang has had an institution of a city.

1929

After the Northeast had accepted the jurisdiction of the Nationalist Government,the city of “Fengtian” was    renamed the city of “Shenyang”.

1931

After Japanese imperialisminvaded and forcely occupied Shengyang, it was renamed Fengtian.

1945

After the Anti-Japanese War, the name of the city was resumed as Shengyang.

November 2,1948

Shenyang gained its liberty.

1953

a provincial municipality of Liaoning

1964

The party committee of Liaoning decided to establish a Shenyang prefecture.  

1993

 The County of Faku and the County of Kangping, which used to belong to the city of Tieling have been put under Shenyang’s administration. The County of Xinmin has been promoted into the City of Xinmin.

Until Now

Shenyang has nine administrative districts and four counties. Namely the Peace District, the Shenhe District, the Huanggu District, the Dadong District, the Tiexi District, the Hunnan District, the Yuhong District, the Sujiatun District, and the New District of Northern Shenyang. The four counties are the County of Liaozhong, the City of Xinmin, the County of Faku, the County of Kangping.     

 

Until Now Shenyang has nine administrative districts and four counties.
