By the end of 2012, the resident population of Shenyang reached 8.228 million, a year-on-year increase of 0.59%. The household registered population increased by 0.29%, amounting 7.248 million of which 5.221 million live in urban area and 2.027 million in county (city). The male population totaled 3.602 million while the female 3.646 million. Shenyang also enjoyed a birth rate of 8.65%, an increase of 0.092%. Sex ratio at birth is 10 to 6.8. Mortality rate increased 0.089%, standing at 8.74%. Natural population growth rate stood at -0.09%，an increase of 0.003%. And planned fertility rate is 97.8%.
According to statistics from the fifth national population census in 2000, Shenyang is home to 41 minority nationalities, namely Manchu, Korean, Mongol, Hui, Xibe, Tujia, Zhuang, Yi, Miao, Uighur, Tibetan, Daur，Buyi, Dong, Bai, Li , She, Yao，Du，Gaoshan，Qiang，Evenki，Hani，Gelao， Russian，Hezhen，Dai，Kazakh，Mulam，Oroqin，Shui，Naxi，Lhoba，Maonan，Jingpo，Salar，Kirghiz，Gin，Lahu，Tajik，and Dongxiang.
The minority population of Shenyang is 705,044, taking up 9.79% of its total population. The population of Manchu reached 383,376, accounting for 54.38% of the minority population; the population of Korean nationality totaled 94,600, taking up 13.42%; the number and proportion of Mongol people is 94,530 and 13.41%; hui has 72,811 people, which takes up 10.33%; Xibe has a population of 54,628 and accounts for 7.75%; the population of the other 36 minority nationalities takes up 0.72% of the minority population, accounting to 5,099. There are seven sub-districts which are partially inhabited by minority communities, together with eight ethnic townships (town) and 256 ethnic villages.
