"Body temperature battery" is successfully developed in Shenyang

February 9, reporter learned from Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences that it has already developed a new kind of material which can use body temperature to generate electricity. It's predicted that in the next 5 years, this kind of new material will be commercialized to supply electricity for bluetooth headsets, health monitors, watches, smart bracelets and other wearable electronic instruments.

Researcher Tai Kaiping introduced this kind of new material at Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science: The single plate of grey soft thin film is less than a finger wide and 0.1mm thick. When sticking it on people's wrist, the ammeter which connects with it will immediately show the output voltage.

"This high-efficient flexible thermoelectric material can be as thin as tens of micrometers." said Tai Kaiping. The thin film battery made with this kind of material can use waste heat which can be seen everywhere in our daily life to generate electricity. For example, use the heat given off by the lampshade of lights or body temperature.

Tai Kaiping said when using body temperature to generate electricity, microwatt---milliwatt electric energy production can be achieved when the temperature difference between body temperature and the environment temperature is about 15 degree centigrade. The energy production varies along with the change of temperature difference. Especially when people doing sports, or the average outdoor temperature in the Northern area is below 20 degree centigrade. This new material can generate electric power as long as temperature difference exits.
