Time of the establishment of sister-city relationship

The signing ceremony of the establishment of sister-city relationship between Shenyang and Kawasaki was held on August 18, 1981 in Japan.Wang Danbo, acting mayor of Shenyang and Ito Saburo, mayor of Kawasaki signed on the agreement. It's emphasized in the protocol that in order to implement the principle and spirit of the Sino-Japanese Treaty for Peace and Friendship and further enhance the friendly exchange between the citizens of both parties, the two sides agree to establish sister-city relationship.From then on, the two cities enhanced the communication and exchange in economy, science, technology, culture, urban construction, education and sports.Wang Danbo and Ito Saburo presented each other the silk banner with "friendship between Shenyang and Kawasaki will pass from one generation to another" on behalf of Shenyang and Kawasaki.

Basic information about Kawasaki

Kawasaki is one of the major cities of Keihin Waterfront Industrial Zone. The city covers an area of 144 square kilometers with a population of 1,42 million. The average population density of this city is 8,385 each square kilometer. It's the 11th largest city of Japan.

Geographical location

The latitude and longitude of Kawasaki is 139°42′12″E and 35°31′46″N. It locates on the northeast side of Kanagawa Prefecture, between Tokyo and Yokohama. The north portion of Kawasaki is bordering on the Tama River and Tokyo. And Tokyo Bay is to the south of Kawasaki. The right bank of Tama River belongs to Kanagawa Prefecture.The western part of Kawasaki is hilly and the eastern part is flat. The coastline is 55.83km. The highest point is 149.5m above the sea level.

Climate

Kawasaki has a humid temperate maritime monsoon climate characterized by mild summers and cold winters. The average annual temperature in Kawasaki is 15.5 °C. The temperatures are highest on average at around 34.3 °C, and lowest at around -3.8 °C. Sunshine duration of the year is about 2,300 hours. The average wind speed is 3.2m/s. The average humidity is 66%. The average annual rainfall is 1154 mm.

History

Kawasaki in the end of the period of Hei An dynasty was formed based on Kawasasiso development by the descendents of Guan Dong magnates as the center and finally became the Kawasaki-juku in Edo period.

In recent centuries, more and more people from all over Japan went to Kawasaki to pay respect to Heikenji temple (also known as Master Kawasaki) at Kawasakidaishi. Agriculture and handicraft industry started to develop gradually.

Kawasaki started to develop industrial economy and formed the industrial belt ranging from Tama River to the costal line by the influence of the new system of Meiji regime.The big capitalist Soichiro Asano proved that the land in Kawasaki sea area is sandy soil, which is quite suitable to develop industry. Thus, a fever of marine reclamation land and construction of industry emerged, which soon made Kawasaki one of the biggest industrial city of Japan.

In the year 1924, Kawasakimachi merged Daishimachi and Miyukimura with and became a city. Population of the city was about 50,000 at that time.After that, Kawasaki city built railways, switchyard and schools. It also positively started the urban construction and played its role as the industrial base of heavy industry.In 1938, the government spent 568,000 Yan to build the city hall. Another four villages merged with Kawasaki city in the same year. The population of the city increased day by day.  

In WWII, the central part of Kawasaki was almost razed to the ground in the air attack.The city started reconstruction at once after the war and reached the level before the war.Public transportation of the city resumed operation in 1950.Population increased to 440,000 in 1955.In 1965, population of the city increased to 850,000. Kawasaki designed the flag of the city, built the Mountain Reservoir and the third Tokyo---Yokohama Highway and opened the airline between Kawasaki and Kisarazu.In 1968, the city published the second comprehensive city plan and initiated the project to create "a city which their citizens are proud of" in order to become a city with a population of one million.In 1972, Kawasaki became a designated city under government order and made the third 5-year plan in 1978. Built Santoku Reservoir and Tama Natural Walkway and built natural traveling village and citizens' square in 1979.Now, they initiated another proposal to create a city life "full of vigor and love".

In the 60s and 70s last century, Kawasaki was one of the cities polluted by industry in Japan. After tens of years of hard work, Kawasaki successfully transformed from a heavy polluted city to an ecological environmental protection city and has become the first batch of ecological city and an ecological demonstration city in Asia-Pacific region designated by UNEP(United Nations Environment Programme) .

Economy

Kawasaki started its economic development from sea reclamation in 1913. NKK and FUJI went to Kawasaki successively.In the beginning of the 20th century, the main industry of Kawasaki was food and other light industry. Gourmet powder and fabric products were quite famous at that time.After 1930s, Kawasaki city built heavy industry region along Tama River and the costal part.Now, Kawasaki has already become one of the most famous Japanese industrial cities. It locates in the center part of Tokyo---Yokohama industrial region and is the industrial base of large-scale petrochemical complex enterprises, iron, electronic, food, mining machinery and ship building.The main industries of Kawasaki are petroleum chemicals, iron, electronics, electric appliances, machine tools, automobiles and some other kinds of heavy industries. Agriculture takes only a tiny part. Kawasaki does not have forestry or fishery.Many big Japanese enterprises all set plants in Kawasaki, such as Kawasaki Heavy Industries, NKK, TOSHIBA, FUJITSU, ISUZU, MITSUBISHI, Komatsu Manufacturing Company and gourmet powder manufacturing plant in Kawasaki.

Kawasaki port is a part of Tokyo---Yokohama port. The depth of water is 12m. Lots of ships arrive and set off from this port each year. It's one of the handful comprehensive ports in Japan. The total length of the wharf is 11.7km with 164 deepwater berths. The cargo is mainly crude oil. Other cargos includes mineral products, chemicals, metal and machineries.

Education

Kawasaki owns 194 universities, colleges, middle schools and primary schools. Meiji University, St.Marianna University and Hosei University are all in Kawasaki.There are 1018 medical care institutes, among which 47 are hospitals of traditional Chinese medicine.The city also owns stadiums, sport courts, swimming courts and ball courts. Various kinds of sports meetings are held each year.

In order to celebrate the 10th anniversary, Kawasaki made the theme song of the city in 1934 and designated azalea and camellia to be the flower and tree of the city, which stand for order and virtue.Besides, many kinds of memorial activities are held each year in Kawasaki.

Friendly exchange

Along with the visit of Vice Governor of Kawasaki to Shenyang, Shenyang and Kawasaki first mentioned the case of establishing sister-city relationship on October 18, 1979.January 24, 1980, mayor of Kawasaki, Ito Saburo, sent a letter to Song Guang, Shenyang mayor, to extend the will to establish sister-city relationship with Shenyang.From November 27 to December 1 in the same year, Shenyang friendship delegation led by Song Guang, Shenyang mayor, visited Kawasaki, Japan. After the negotiation, the two cities planned to officially host the signing ceremony of the establishment of sister-city relationship in Kawasaki in autumn, 1981.On August 18, 1981, acting mayor of Shenyang, Wang Danbo and Ito Saburo, mayor of Kawasaki, Japan signed sister-city relationship agreement officially which opened a new era of the communication between the two cities.The two cities carried out extensive exchange and communication in economy, trade, science, technology, culture, education, sports and health in the past 30 years.The two cities decided to exchange souvenirs in the 5th anniversary to memorize the establishment of sister-city relationship in 1986.The aerial view car given by Kawasaki was settled at Beiling Park in 1987. "Shenxiu Garden" the courtyard style architecture given by Shenyang to Kawasaki was finally built up at Kawasakidaishi Park. During the product exhibition Shenyang held in Kawasaki, the representatives of Shenyang showed the skills of making Laobian dumplings, seal cutting and painting.Kawasaki city specially set up a display hall for the exhibits Shenyang kept in Kawasaki.On May 31, 1991, the commemorative ceremony for the 10th anniversary of the establishment of sister-city relationship between Shenyang and Kawasaki was held at Shenyang Friendship Hotel. Shenyang mayor Wu Disheng and Kawasaki mayor Takahashi addressed speeches respectively and signed Protocol on the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of Sister-city Relationship and other 14 relevant agreements.On April 24, 1997, Kawasaki Modern Japanese Federation Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition was held at Liaoning Provincial Museum.In September and October, 2000, representatives of Japanese Kawasaki Industry Promotion Group and Labour and Welfare Association paid visit to Shenyang respectively.In 2006, vice mayor of Kawasaki, Japan, led the delegation to visit Shenyang during the opening of Shenyang Expo Garden.In 2007, Kawasaki traditional music delegation attended Shenyang---Kawasaki Traditional Music Communication Day activity held in Shenyang.In 2009, Shenyang hosted Shenyang---Kawasaki Environmental Protection Day.On August 30, 2011, the commemorative activity for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of sister-city relationship between Shenyang and Kawasaki was held at Shenyang. Mayor of Kawasaki, Abe Takao, attended the reception and exchanged gifts with Zeng Wei, municipal party secretary of Shenyang.The exchange and communication between the two cities have covered environmental protection, health, running water and many other areas till now.
