Time of treaty signing

On September 14, 1984, on the invitation of Josef·Kürten, mayor of Dusseldorf of the Federal Republic of Germany, a 5-person delegation led by Shenyang mayor Li Changchun paid a friendly visit to Dusseldorf.September 22, in order to better develop the communication and cooperation between the two cities, and enhance mutual understanding and friendship, the two parties agreed to establish a long-term friendly cooperation relationship. Dusseldorf mayor Josef·Kürten and Shenyang mayor Li Changchun signed on the agreement on behalf of the two cities.It's stated in the agreement that Shenyang and Dusseldorf will positively promote and expand the economic cooperation, trade and transfer of technology on the basis of friendly cooperation, equality and mutual benefit. They would make all effort to carry out exchange in science, technology, culture and sports, and make contribution to the prosperity of the two cities.

Basic information

Dusseldorf, where Nordrhein-Westfalen state government locates, covers an area of 217 square kilometers and has a population of about 570,000. It's the 9th largest city of Germany and one of the most important commercial cities of western Germany. Dorf means 'village' in German. That's why people jokingly call it 'the biggest village of Europe.

Geographical location

Dusseldorf lies in the northwest part of Federal Republic of Germany, the intersection of Rhine and Düssel River and on the right bank of Rhine. Ruhr industrial region is on the north side of Dusseldorf. Kölner is on the southeast side of the city. The urban area and most part of the city is on the east bank of Rhine River. Only 13 kilometers of its administrative region is on the west bank of Rhine River. It's the most important industrial city on the northwest part of Germany and close to Netherlands.

Climate

Germany locates in the intersection of oceanic climate and continental climate and in mid and high latitudes ranging from 47--55. It has four distinct seasons. The average temperature changes from -6 degree centigrade in January in winter to 26 degree centigrade in the third tenth of July in summer. But the weather is quite comfortable.The best time for traveling is from May to October. The temperature is suitable and the day is comparatively long. People can only see the sunset after 21:00.

History

Dusseldorf has a history of 700 years. Back in the past, it was only a small town by the river of Dussel River. When Roman Empire was busy consolidating its position in Europe, some Germanic people settled down at the marsh land on the east bank of Rhine River. In the 7th, 8th century, tribes were formed in the places where Dussel flew into Rhine. They lived on agriculture and fishing. The earliest written record can be traced back to 1135.It was the manor of Berg Count in 1189.In 1280, the administrative division was moved here. Dusseldorf was then named a city on August 14, 1288.It's only a small town for many years.In 1380, a duke built up a castle in Dusseldorf, which was then expand into an official mansion.Only the Schlossturm was left behind after a big fire in the 19th century.This ancient tower with a cylindrical foundation and an octangle top became the symbol of Dusseldorf.John William was the emperor during 1679--1716.It's a period of great prosperity of art in Dusseldorf.He built opera houses and art galleries for the city.Artists, musicians, architects and scholars got together in the palace.Under his lead, Dusseldorf became an art center.His successors moved the capital to Heidelberg later. Dusseldorf then withered and fell.Duke Carl built Schloss Benrath from 1756 to 1768 in the south part of the city for hunting.In the 19th century, Napoleon brought war to Rhine River. He zoned Dusseldorf to Berg grand duchy. His brother-in-law was entitled the monarch.Napoleon had a tour in the city too.He ordered to tear down the city wall and build parks and avenues, which made the look of the city chang radically.In 1838, the first railway in the western part of Germany, Düsseldorf-Erkrath railway, was opened. Iron industry started to develop in Dusseldorf. The city then became a large city with a population of 100,000.During WWII, Dusseldorf was almost torn down. After the reconstruction in 1946, Dusseldorf became the capital of Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Administrative division

Dusseldorf is composed of inner city, second ring and outer city.Inner city has two parts, the old and the new city. It's the place where administrative institutes and important culture, science and technology institutes locate.The second ring is the place where residential region, parks, nursing homes and some enterprises locate.The outer city is the place where big factories, residential area for the workers and the satellite towns lie.

Economy

Dusseldorf is the economic and finance center and transportation hub in western Germany. It's honored as the "office table of Ruhr". It's the important industrial city in western Germany and the center of trade and service industry.Early in the 18th century, metal smelting and processing industry started in the city. In the 19th century, various kinds of production and daily supply emerged along with the entering and development of metal smelting and textile industry.The first gas supply plant and the first water supply plant started in 1866.The first heat-engine plant started operation in 1891.The first inland port was built up in 1896.The first highway bridge was built on Rhine River in 1898.Before WWII, Dusseldorf was the most advanced industrial city in Germany. It was severely destroyed in the war. The reconstruction work was carried out successfully. Dusseldorf entered the enormous economy development stage in 1960s.In 1981, the Gross National Product (GNP) of Dusseldorf reached 30.99 billion Deutsche Mark.The major industries of Dusseldorf nowadays are iron, coal, chemical engineering, automobile, electrical machinery, glass, precise instrument, textile and paper making. Iron, machinery, chemical engineering and glass industry have won great reputation all over the world. Pillar industries of Dusseldorf are finance, chemical engineering, exhibition and service.

There are 5000 foreign companies in Dusseldorf (600 Dutch enterprises, 450 Japanese enterprises, 450 American companies, 350 British companies and 250 French companies); 80 consulates and foreign business chambers;180 finance institutes, of which 55 are foreign banks.Large enterprises such as Bayer, Daimler Chrysler, Degussa, Deutsche Telekom, SIMENS, Deutsche Bank, Thyssen, Mannesmann, Metro, Thyssen Krupp, Veba Group, Siemag and Henkel all set their headquarters in Dusseldorf.Many international companies set headquarters or representative offices in Dusseldorf.Such as Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Citibank, Ericsson, China MinMetals Corporation, Nokia and P&G.According to the reporter of Le Monde in 2003, the business volume of Metro, E-on, Thyssen Krupp, Degussa, Henkel and Vodafone D2 ranks in the first place among all German companies.

Conference and exhibition industry

Dusseldorf is also the fashion capital of Germany. It's also the world's famous city of fashion.World's large scale fashion show and fashion fairs are held here each year.Dusseldorf is also famous for its exhibition and conference industry. Large international exhibitions are held in this city all year round.For example, the largest fashion show such as Igedo and CPD, the world's largest medical equipment fair, the world's largest ship exhibition and the world's largest printing machine exhibition are all held in Dusseldorf.

Culture and education

Art and culture is the tradition of Dusseldorf. Historical sites from the 13th century to the 18th century, art institutes, notable ceramics museums and universities are well preserved in the city.Heinrich Heine was born here in 1797.Famous universities such as Heinrich Heine University, Clara Schumann Conservatory of Music, Robert Schumann Music School, Dusseldorf Academy of Art, Dusseldorf School of Technology and other famous schools are here.The opera houses, theaters and comedy theaters of Dusseldorf are quite famous in Germany.Various kinds of colorful cultural life here let lots of artists, designers, advertising designers and fashion designers take Dusseldorf as their hometown. They turned Dusseldorf into the art center.

Heinrich Heine University is also called Dusseldorf University. It locates in the southern part of Dusseldorf. It's a national university of Dusseldorf in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.It was founded in 1966. The origin of this university is a medical school. Gradually it becomes a comprehensive university of medical science, philosophy, law, maths, nature science, economy and other subjects.In the year 1988, Dusseldorf University was named after Heinrich Heine, German poet, writer and political thinker.

Friendly exchange

Shenyang is honored as the "iron belt" of China. It's the center of the country's largest and the most important mining industry region and the management center.Thus, it established friendly relationship with Dusseldorf in the beginning of 1980s.Dusseldorf is called the "office table" of Ruhr. It's the management center of the most important iron and coal region.

In 1984, Josef Kürten, mayor of Dusseldorf, and Li Changchun, mayor of Shenyang, signed on the friendly cooperation relationship agreement on behalf of their cities and confirmed the economic cooperation relationship between the two parties.The two parties have kept good cooperative relationship since then and have been constantly expanding the exchanges and cooperations in trade, business, science, technology and culture.Besides, they also expanded and developed many projects in social and political areas.In these projects, the two parties have regular exchanges of visits to each other and carry out discussion on various kinds of specific topics.

In 2004, Joachim Erwin, mayor of Dusseldorf, and Chen Zhenggao, mayor of Shenyang, extended the period of the friendly cooperative relationship agreement and attended the foundation ceremony of the branch office of Dusseldorf municipal government in Shenyang.The two cities regularly carry out investment seminars, trade forum, economic development workshop, exhibition seminars, urban planning workshop in both Dusseldorf and Shenyang.

In April, 2006, in order to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of friendship relationship between Shenyang and Dusseldorf, Joachim Erwin, mayor of Dusseldorf, paid an official friendly visit to Shenyang. Chen Zhenggao, mayor of Shenyang, and Joachim Erwin signed friendly cooperation memorandum and reached agreement on the establishment of representative institutes in the other city and the development of cooperation.

In 2011, Shenyang had business cooperation with Dusseldorf Exhibition Company.
