Treaty signing

Shenyang Municipal Government and Chicago built relationship in 1983. In the extensive contact afterward, the two parties realized that Shenyang and Chicago have a lot in common. The two cities have vast potential for future development in exchange and cooperation. In August, 1984, the two parties signed "scheduling agreement for the establishment of friendly relationship".

On September 3, 1985, the Chicago delegation led by Harold Washington paid a friendly visit to Shenyang. During the visit, Shenyang mayor Wu Disheng and Chicago mayor Harold Washington had friendly talks. The two parties had exhaustive exchange of views and agreed to establish sister-city relationship officially.

On September 5, 1985, the signing ceremony of the establishment of sister-city relationship between Shenyang and Chicago was held at Shenyang Hotel.Shenyang mayor Wu Disheng and Chicago mayor Harold signed on the agreement on behalf of their cities. Another agreement signed at the same time is about the friendly exchange projects in next two years.

General information of the city

Chicago, officially the City of Chicago, is the third most populous city in the United States. With over 2.7 million residents (by 2011) and an urban area of 606.2 square kilometers, it is also the most populous city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States, rank only next to New York and Los Angeles.Besides, most of the earliest residents of Chicago were from Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Germany and China. Thus, Chicago today is a racially mixed city. 38.6% of the residents are black people, 37.9% of them are white people and 3.5% of them are asian people.

Geographic position

Chicago is located in northeastern Illinois on the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan. The length from the south to the north of the city is 40.23km. The width from the east to the west of the city is 24.14km. The coordinates of Chicago is 41° 50′ 13″ N, 87° 41′ 5″ W. Besides, terrain of Chicago is fairly flat. Average altitude is 176m.

Climate

The city lies within the humid continental climate zone, and experiences four distinct seasons.The highest temperature is in July. The average highest temperature is 29℃.The coldest time of the year is January. The lowest temperature is -11℃.Chicago has adequate rainfall. Annual average rainfall is 965mm. What is worth mentioning is that affected by Michigan Lake, Chicago is windy all year round. That's why it's also called "the wind city".

History

In the mid-18th century, the area was inhabited by a Native American tribe known as the Potawatomi. In 1803, the United States Army built Fort Dearborn here. The Ottawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi tribes had ceded additional land to the United States in the 1816 Treaty of St. Louis. The Potawatomi were forcibly removed from their land after the Treaty of Chicago in 1833. On August 12, 1833, Chicago town was founded. Along with the growth of population, Chicago town was then upgraded into Chicago city on March 4, 1837.

In the first century since its foundation, Chicago is one of the cities with the fastest growth in population in the world. In 1900, the population of the city has exceeded one million.Besides, it's also the one of the major cities and the distribution center for agricultural products in midwestern America.Chicago's first railway, Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, and the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848. The Illinois--Michigan canal allowed steamboats and sailing ships on the Great Lakes to connect to the Mississippi River.Chicago became the important transportation junction connecting the eastern and western part of America.The convenient surface transportation greatly benefited the development of industry and commerce of Chicago.Manufacturing and retail and finance sectors became dominant, influencing the American economy.

The date of May 1 (an ancient European folk holiday known as May Day) emerged in 1886 as an alternative holiday for the celebration of labor, later becoming known as International Workers' Day. The date had its origins at the 1885 convention of the American Federation of Labor, which passed a resolution calling for adoption of the eight hour day effective May 1, 1886.

The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned from Sunday, October 8, to Tuesday, October 10, 1871. The fire killed up to 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles (9 km2) of Chicago, Illinois, and left more than 90,000 residents homeless. Property damage reached 200 million US dollars.

After the fire, Chicago started the reconstruction work immediately. During its rebuilding period, Chicago constructed the world's first skyscraper in 1885, using steel-skeleton construction. Afterwards, Chicago started to innovate their architectures. Chicago today has already become the "hometown of skyscraper".

Continuing racial tensions and violence, such as the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, also occurred from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. Mayor Richard J. Daley, a Democrat, was elected in 1955, started to build the city. Chicago started to go towards prosperity.

Chicago today pays great attention to the quality of urban environment and the municipal infrastructure construction, implement reconstruction of decadent streets, built lots of landscapes along Michigan Lake and Chicago Lake for Chicago residents. Chicago started flourishing.

Administrative division

The urban area of Chicago is quite large. It can be divided into middle, north, west and south parts (the east part is Michigan Lake). The middle part of the city is commercial district. The north part is the exclusive residential district of the rich white people. The west part and the south part are the residential areas for the black people.Chicago Loop, which locates in the central part of Chicago, is honored the "world's richest and busiest region" by Chicago people."Chicago Loop" means ring road. It's named after its location. The place is inside the rail of overhead railway (the part of the metro on the surface). The whole Chicago Loop covers 7 blocks in the length and 5 blocks in the width.

Economy

Chicago is the most balanced developed economic entity of America. There are four pillar industries in Chicago. They are manufacturing industry, wholesale, retail, finance and food processing. Many "No.1" were born in Chicago in economic region. Such as: agricultural machinery manufacturing industry, meat processing, ferrous metallurgy industry. Besides the reputation of "the world's capital of sweets", the largest catering company and the largest food processing company are all located in American.

As one of the most important financial centers in midwestern America, Chicago Stock Exchange is the second largest stock exchanges in America (ranking only next to New York Stock Exchange). Besides, there are 300 American banks, 40 foreign banks and 16 insurance companies in Chicago. The commercial load of these financial institutes ranks top 3 in America and top 3 in the United States Federal Reserve Board.

Culture and education

Chicago is quite prosperous in culture. There are 46 museums and more than 200 theaters in Chicago. The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Botanical Garden are all the top class museums of the world. The Art Institute of Chicago is one the top 4 art museums of America. It owns art pieces worth 250 million US dollars. Besides, Chicago Public Library is the largest public libraries all over the world with more than two million books.

Education, scientific research capability of Chicago also rank the top place in America. There are various types of schools with abundant classes in Chicago.University of Chicago, which was established in 1891, is one of the most famous universities in America. It's honored "the cradle of Nobel Prize winners". More than 80 students of this university won Nobel Prize. Also, it owns lots of scientific research institutes. Fermi Lab and Argonne National Laboratory are the first labs which researched nuclear energy. The first nuclear reactors were successfully developed there.

Since the establishment of sister-relationship between Shenyang and Chicago, the municipal governments of the two cities carried out many mutual visits. Shenyang delegation led by municipal leaders of Shenyang paid 9 visits to Chicago. Chicago delegation also paid more than 10 visits in Shenyang. Along with the in-depth friendly exchanges, Chicago sister-city project specially set up "China group committee" to specially carry out exchange activities with Shenyang.Besides, Shenyang delegation re-signed the bulletin of sister-city relationship during the visit to Chicago in 1995.Two years later, the two cities re-signed the joint declaration to confirm the sister-city relationship. In 2004, Chen Zhenggao, Shenyang mayor, led the delegation to Chicago. During the visit, Chen Zhenggao signed Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between Shenyang and Chicago on behalf of Shenyang.In 2011, Shenyang mayor Chen Haibo and Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago, carried out conversations on cooperation of trade and culture. After the conversation, the two mayors signed Agreement on Enhancing the Sister-city Relationship between Shenyang and Chicago. The friendly cooperative relationship between Shenyang and Chicago.

Besides, Shenyang and Chicago have achieved fruitful results in the exchange of economy, culture, science and technology. In 1996, Shenyang TV Station and the 11th channel of Chicago Television Production Center officially signed exchange agreement;In 1997, Shenyang Photograph Exhibition was held in Chicago and aroused great response;In 2003, Shenyang mayor Chen Zhenggao met with Liu Hong, vice chairman of Chicago Overseas Chinese Federation and negotiated about Shenyang performance groups to give performances in Chicago;In 2004, Zhang Xingxiang, secretary of Shenyang Municipal Party Committee met with the medical delegation of Chicago, America;In the same year, Northeast Yucai School and Pre-high School of University of Chicago established friendly relationship;In 2006, Chicago delegation came to Shenyang to attend the opening ceremony of Shenyang Expo Garden;In 2008, the inauguration ceremony of the trade and economic representative office of Shenyang Municipal Government in the US was held in Chicago;In the same year, Shenyang mayor Li Yingjie met with Chicago delegation who came to attend "2008 Northeast Asia Development Forum" in Shenyang;In 2010, Shenyang mayor Chen Haibo met with Elizabeth Harrington, executive director of Chicago China Economy Development Center. The two sides had conversations on friendly exchange and economic cooperation.
