Time of treaty

October 5, 1993, Shenyang, China, and Monterrey, Mexico, signed the agreement for the establishment of sister-city relationship to further consolidate and develop the friendly cooperation relationship between the two cities and promote the social and economic development.This agreement was signed by vice mayor of Shenyang, Liu Ketian, and mayor of Monterrey, Benjamin Clariond Reyes Retana, in Monterrey. The two cities will positively carry out exchanges in economy, trade, science, technology, culture and sports on the basis of friendly cooperation and mutual benefit. The two parties also signed an implementation of the agreement (1993---1995) on exchange visits, science and technology exchanges, training and sending art and sports delegations to each other.

Basic information of the city

Monterrey is the capital and largest city of the northeastern state of Nuevo León, in Mexico. It's also the center of Monterrey metropolitan area.The total area of the city is 6680 square kilometers with a population of 3.788 million (2005).It's the second largest city of Mexico next to the capital, Mexico city.It's the third largest city of Mexico in population, only next to Mexico city and Guadalajara. It owns the title "queen in the north", "giant in the northeast", "town of mountains" and "capital of the north".

Geographical location

Coordinates of Monterrey is 25° 40′ 0″ N, 100° 18′ 0″ W. It locates on Sierra Madre Oriental.The Santa Catarina River—dry most of the year on the surface but with flowing underground water—bisects Monterrey from east to west, separating the city into north and south halves, and drains the city to the San Juan River and Rio Grande.The whole city is embraced by mountains which makes the unique scenery of the city.Sierra Madre Oriental makes the terrain of the city declines from the west to the east.Crown Mountain locates in the northwest of the city. It got its name from its shape. The shape of the mountain looks just like the crown of the bishops. Saddle Mountain is on the east of the city. It's also the landmark of the city. The elevation of the highest peak on the north is 1820m.

Climate

Monterrey has a semi-arid climate. Summers are generally hot, spring and fall temperate, and winters mild, with temperatures rarely below freezing. It's dry all year round. The annual average temperature is between 20°C to 25°C. The average high in August is 35 °C and the average low is 23 °C. It will last from the end of June to the beginning of September. The highest temperature may reach 39°C to 40°C. Affected by warm and wet air current from the ocean, temperature drops in winter severely. Temperature may even drop below zero for two or three days. Snowfall rarely happens every 4-7 years. The annual rainfall is about 750mm.

History

History of Monterrey is closely linked with the history of Nuevo Leon.In the beginning of the establishment of New Kingdom of León, only about 30 people settled down at Monterrey, Monclova and Saltillo.The hordes, Texan and Americans gradually settled down there.After the invasion of the Americans, Monterrey became the strategic area of industry and trade between Mexico and the US.Separated by Madre Mountains and isolated by government of New Spain and the independent Mexico, Monterrey finally started the development in population, society, politics and economy in the 19th century.

Monterrey was founded on September 20, 1596.It's named after Gaspal de Sunega Acevedo, grand duke of Monterrey, governor-general of New Spain. Thus, Monterrey is both an old and a modern city.People can see the combination of ancient culture and modern fashion at the grand square of the city center.Classic architectures can be seen among modernized buildings. Space is specially left for people to see the mountains in the city center.

Administrative division

Monterrey has 12 administration divisions. They are Apodaca, Escobedo, García, Guadalupe, Santiago, Juárez, San Nicolás de los Garza, San Pedro Garza García, Santa Catarina, Salinas Victoria and Monterrey. The old town area is centered with Zaragoza Plaza. It's the religious and administrative district; The new town area is the industrial and commercial district.

Economy

Monterrey is the second largest city in economy in Mexico ranks only next to Mexico city, the capital of Mexico.San Pedro Garza García of Monterrey metropolitan area is one of the most advanced region of Latin America.

The city's economic wealth has been attributed in part to its proximity to the United States-Mexico border and economic links to the United States. Pan-American Highway built in the 30s, 20th century, and the railway built to Laredo, the US, in 1882, promoted the development of Monterrey. It also explored the iron, coal, lead and zinc mines in the west and north part of the city.In 1950s, it connected with the natural gas pipelines with Reynosa and Tampico and built Falcon reservoir, which ensures the fuel, water and electric power supply. Development of industry accelerated. It expanded the urban area. Population grew rapidly. In the early 60s, it became the largest city in the north part of Mexico. It's also the metallurgical industrial center, which owns the largest and oldest iron enterprise in Mexico and Latin America.The output volume takes 3/4 of the total output volume of the country in 1980;In the north and east part of the city is irrigated agricultural area, which produces cotton and oranges. It also owns lead, gold and silver mines around that area.It's also advanced in the non-ferrous metal metallurgy industry.The largest beer company and industrial departments of glass, bulb, cement, enamel, fabric, cigarette, clothes, metal processing, flour, paper making and chemical products are also there.

Many large scale industrial enterprises, banks and consortium set their headquarters there. Many famous international enterprises such as FEMSA, Cemex, Axtel, Alfa, the headquarter of Mexico Northern Commercial Bank, Maseca, SALINAS Group of Mexico, British American Tobacco, Siemens and Lenovo of China all set their headquarters or branch companies in Monterrey.

Monterrey transferred from manufacturing industry to information and service industry.Along with the hosting of the international business and trade negotiations, tourism has become one of the new emerging industries of Monterrey.Besides, Monterrey is also the second largest finance center and stock market of Mexico.It owns the highway, railway and airlines to the border of the US, Mexico Bay and other places. Monterrey Airport is one of the most modernized airports in Northern America.

Culture and education

Monterrey owns more than 30 universities and colleges. The most famous public university of the northeastern Mexico is Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) is there.Besides, Monterrey also has other local universities such as UDEM, ITESM, UVM, UN, UHA and UR.

Monterrey is an international metropolis which owns many museums. Such as the Museum of Modern Art, Mexico History Museum, Governor-General Museum, Northeast Museum, Natural History Museum, Glass Museum, Monterrey Museum, Alfa Planetarium and Museum, Mexico Celebrity's House for Professional Baseball Players. Besides, Nuevo León Art House, cultural and art center, and Civil Affair Art College Fine Art Gallery are in Monterrey.

The development of theater and drama benefited from the UANL. The May Theater and Magana Hall cultivated lots of youths who are talented in drama.In recent ten years, various kinds of dramas have constant development, such as local folk drama, national drama and international dramas have been put on show in the cinemas and theaters, especially City Theater, Louis Theater, San Peter Concert Hall, IMSS Theater, San Nicholas City Theater.

In recent years, many important international conferences were held in Monterrey. Such as the world summit on the development capita hosted by UN, 2004 Summit of the Americas and 2007 Global Culture Summit in which more than 4 million participated.1999 World Baseball Classic, 2002 World Bicycle Competition, 2001--2016 Monterrey Motor Races, the 17th World Karate Championship in 2004, 2009 Monterrey Open Tennis Championship were all held in Monterrey.
