Researchers found the nanocrystalline with supper stability

Academician Lu Ke and researcher Li Xiuyan who work at the "Recruitment Program of Ten Thousand Experts" scientists' workshop, Shenyang National Laboratory of Materials Science, found that the instability of the nano- structured materials produced by plastic deformation only occurs to the grains of certain sizes. The stability increases along with the decrease of the grain size.May 8, reporter learned from Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) .

Some of the nanocrystalline metal, such as fine copper, the nano-grains even grow up at room temperature. The instability brought about difficulties in the production and practical appliances of nanocrystalline metal.

It's also found in the research that the stability of nano-grains doesn't only exist in metals with low or medium stacking fault energy, such as fine copper, it also exists in metals with high stacking fault energy, such as fine nickel.The discovery of nano-grains with supper stability is not only very important to the understanding of the deformation mechanism of the nano-grains and the behavior of them in certain sizes, it also shows the possibility of the development of the usage of nano-grains in high temperature.This research has won the fund assistance of major and special fund of nanocrystalline science of Science and Technology Department and National Natural Science Foundation of China.The result of the research has been published on Science on May 4, 2018.
