An exhibition of fans from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties opened at Shenyang Palace Museum in Northeast China’s Liaoning province, on July 20.

A total of 145 fans are on display, mostly works from calligraphers and painters in the regions south of the Yangtze River.

The exhibition is being hosted by Shenyang Palace Museum, Hangzhou Museum and Jinhua Museum in East China’s Zhejiang province, and will continue until Sept 17.

Four categories of fan art are on exhibition, including landscape paintings, bird-and-flower paintings, figure paintings, and poems written in calligraphy.

Fans in imperial China often contained pictures or poetry and were used by people to express their feelings.
