NE China’s first workstation for Nobel Prize unveiled in Shenyang

The unveiling ceremony of a Nobel Prize workstation for Professor Randy W. Schekman was held in Heping district, Shenyang, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, on Aug 1.

Jointly established by Liaoning Zhongtian stem cell and regenerative medicine innovation research institute and Professor Randy W. Schekman, the workstation is the first of its kind in Northeast China.

More than 50 people attended the unveiling ceremony, including representatives from the Shenyang municipal government, Heping district’s government and medical institutions in the city.

Born in 1948 in the United States, Professor Randy W. Schekman received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2013, and is currently a molecular and cellular biology professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Schekman’s research discoveries are widely applied in medicine, specifically in areas like tumor treatment and respiratory system treatment.

Che Naiying, Liaoning Zhongtian’s president, unveiled the workstation with Professor Randy W. Schekman.

Che said that relying on the workstation, more personnel trainings will be conducted and more cooperation with world-famous stem cell research institutes will be achieved.

With strengthened research abilities, the development of the stem cell industry in Liaoning province will continue, so that high-tech medical products can be available to residents, Che added.

Heping district is promoting development of high-tech industries, especially the health industry. It is seeking cooperation with like-minded global counterparts to build a health and lifestyle industrial park in the district.
